Little known fact about me, I’m a triple threat. I can not sing, dance, and act, but I am a photographer, stylist, and young mom! You’re probably thinking I just threw 3 random facts about myself together just to pretend I’m cool.. yes that’s exactly what I did. But, I chose those 3 (of my mannnyyy) talents and qualities for a reason. That reason is, I’m going to help you look your absolute best for your next family or senior photos.
I was stumped when thinking of how to write this, because every person has such a unique personality and style, I though “how in the world can I help them all”. And I came to the conclusion that I cannot. I can’t save the world or help every single person I meet, but I can at least tell you what’s “in” and “trending” right now. I know photographers, myself included, always tell you to stay far far away from “trends” when choosing outfits for photos. But, I’m contradicting that because I’m not asking you to wear silly bands or Uggs, I’m going to show you how to be in style with 2018 while also making sure your outfits look classy, not tacky and trendy!
Let’s begin Fall Fashion 101 with yours truly.
Yes you read that right. Floral is NOT just for spring. Why limit a good thing to only one season? You don’t only eat ice-cream when it’s hot out.. do you? (Please tell me if you do so I can block you from my life). When you think of floral, you do think bright springy colors of blooming flowers. But we’re her to break rules. Take a look at some adorable florals for fall below! Yes it’s a thing, and yes you can rock it.

You can never go wrong with stripes. I personally love them because you can pair and layer them with anything. Stripes have been in fashion since the beginning (ok well I don’t know that for sure, but I’ve seen my mom in stripes when she was little so that’s long enough. Sorry mom, you’re not old I promise!) Striped add pattern, and lively hood to your outfit. Here’s some examples of how you can pair stripes with other pieces and really stand out!

Well, if you didn’t guess this was coming, your English teacher did not teach you about foreshadowing! While the simple people in life might gasp at the thought of mixing patterns, fear not! I was once you! An average girl, horrified at the thought of mixing patterns. But I was scared because I didn’t know how to do it! Mixing patterns is an art, you have to have a good eye (or be good at searching Pinterest for ideas) to master it. But, since we’re not all born with the magic of mixing patterns without looking like a confused toddler who dressed themselves, I have some inspiration for ya below.
This is another tough one for me because for some reason, I had it engraved in my brain that I could not wear a blazer unless I worked an office job and carried a brief case. This is not the case! In fact, mixing dressy pieces into your casual everyday wardrobe is not only a fashion trend, but it’s so flippin cute! I never knew I could love a blazer over a pullover sweatshirt as much as I do now. It’s also a great way to dress down without looking too casual.. you know for those school parent meetings where you want to look professional but not uptight and casual, but not lazy? Yeah next time one of those comes around, pair some jeans with a blouse and you’ll rock it!
Again, yes you read that right! Why limit bralettes to only hotter seasons? I sure don’t. I’ve basically kicked all my bras to the curb once I tried bralettes. I can’t even remember the last time I wore a “real” bra….. probably when all my bralettes were dirty and I slacked on laundry. Bralettes aren’t only the most comfortable things in the universe, they’re also super stylish. Even during Fall and Winter, pairing bralettes with sweaters or oversized shirts is perfect! Even when my shirt covers all of my chest and shoulders, I still wear bralettes because they’re so comfortable and you can find them anywhere in any color!
Thank goodness for jumpsuits because I do not do rompers! I love the idea of rompers, but every time I try to wear one I’m so self conscious about my butt falling out! The solution? The amazing jumpsuit!! Jumpsuits are literally just long rompers, and I’m here for them. Plus, they look like dresses when you stand with your legs together and then you can surprise people and yell “PANTS” and jump with your legs open. Jumpsuits allow people like me to be unladylike by sitting criss cross applesauce, or with your legs up without worrying about anything showing or falling out. I love jumpsuits.
It’s 2018 and ladies run the world. We’re fighting for equal rights (yes still), standing up for each other, and dealing with a lot of issues head on. Yet, we’re still dressing like men because we can and we want to. Like I said, it’s 2018. Men can dress like women and women can dress like men. It’s ok! A common stereotype is if a woman is dressed in “manly” clothes, they must be gay. Well sisters, we are here to snap that stereotype and show the world that we wear menswear better than men do! Give us a pant suit and we can continue to run the world!
Baseball Tee’s, Varsity jackets, and stripes, Oh my! The varsity look is something I’m also living for, as a fellow young mom. When I’m at home with no work to do, do you think I really put on a dress and heels to go to Target? Absolutely not. I will however, put on a baseball tee, my converse, and a hat and wear that anywhere! The Varsity look is fun because it’s comfy, casual, and perfect for day to day wear. Plus, it includes a ton of stripes, which is also a trend, so you’re killing two birds with one stone!
9. Plaid Flannels and Button Downs
Good ole’ trusty plaid button downs win again! They’ve been a fashion staple for years, and I just keep on loving it! Plaids are amazing for all seasons, and their ability to be so versatile is what makes them a personal fave. I have plaids for all seasons, including summer! I tie them around my waist, layer them with sweaters, button them up, put them over graphic tees, the options are endless! Plaids are also so in right now because it’s finally starting to feel like fall some days, but gets hot other days. They’re a great transition piece because you can wear them as an extra layer for warmth, or tie them around your waist if it gets too toasty!
So, being a mom, I understand you want comfort and casual wear that can take a few spills here and there. Being a photographer, I understand that you want to look amazing and trendy, but also keep your outfits classic to look back on. Finally, as a stylist, I understand that you want on trend clothes and pieces you can wear multiple ways. Smash all of that together and you have this list! But, if this still isn’t helpful enough, don’t worry! I’m now offering personal styling help to ALL my photography clients!! And if you’re not a client and just need some help revamping your closet, you can make a personal styling appointment at your closest Maurices and we’ll get you all set up! While I did include pictures of other brands than Maurices, that’s where I also work and am a stylist at, so I know personally that we offer styling appointments. That’s not to say that other stores don’t, you’d just have to check and see before going in and shopping.
I hope you enjoyed updating yourself on what the cool kids are wearing these days and can’t wait to see how you put these trends to good use! Until next time my fashion loving friends!
